  • Cockroaches

  • Cockroaches are nocturnal insects so if you see any during the day it is a sign of infestation. They tend to prefer dark, moist places to hide and breed so are commonly found behind kitchen appliances, sinks and cookers. They can flatten their bodies to fit into narrow spaces so can also be seen under mats, behind wallpaper and within cracks in the wall. In Britain, there are two main species. The Oriental which is dark brown/black and 20 to 24mm long and the German cockroach which is light yellowy/brown and is 10 to 15mm long.
Cockroaches will feed on almost anything but although they can last for several months without eating they can only live a few days without water.

    Signs of a Cockroach infestation:

    • Cockroach faeces. Small roaches produce faeces that resemble coffee grounds or black pepper.
    • Larger roaches expel cylindrical droppings.
    • Some species emit a strong oily or musty smell.
    • Look for the bodies of dead roaches.
    • Check for oval shaped egg cases in creases in furniture or other dark areas like between books.
